Before the procedure, let us know first why they break in the first place.

Here are the common reasons:

  • Corrosion
  • General Deterioration
  • Not Well Maintained
  • Not Lubricated Enough

If you have checked one of the reasons, your torsion springs indeed need a replacement.

To replace a damaged torsion spring, you’ll need the following tools:

  • There are two winding bars.

These are required to relieve stress from the current springs at the start of the process and to properly tension the new torsion springs at the conclusion.

  • Vise grips are a must-have accessory.

When you remove the existing springs, this will protect the torsion shaft from sliding out.

  • Wrenches: 1/2, 3/8, 7/16, and 9/16-inch square head

Before you begin, bear in mind that the remaining, unbroken spring still retains tension, so put on your protective goggles and make sure your winding bars are attached in the torsion spring.

The steps for replacing a damaged torsion springs are as follows.

  1. Let go of the springs’ tension.

Insert a winding bar in one of the winding cone’s holes and slowly relieve the tension.

  1. Using a 9/16-inch or 1/2-inch wrench, remove the springs from the middle cone.
  2. Use vice grips to keep the torsion shaft from falling out while you remove the old springs.
  3. Release the spring keys, move the spring to the end, release the drum keys, remove the cable, and push the drum to the center of the torsion bar.
  4. Slide the torsion shaft more toward the centre of the door opener, detach the drum, and pull the first spring off to remove the existing torsion spring.
  5. Double-check that you’re using the correct torsion spring for the left and right sides.  The wire should go through the spring’s top.

Extra Tip: You can only change a plastic center bearing by disconnecting the torsion springs.

This is an excellent moment to replace your bearing with a steel center bearing with a substantially greater cycle rating.

The torsion shaft is also kept from rubbing it against the central bracket.

  1. Withdraw the vice grips from the shaft’s midsection and secure the springs to the central bracket with bolts.
  2. Use your winding bars to provide tension.

For a 7ft door, this will take around 30 quarter turns, and for an 8ft door, it will take about 33 quarter turns.

  1. Afterwards, ramp up one winding bar and fasten the keys with a 3/4 turn.
  2. Secure the keys on the drums by winding the cord at the ends.
  3. To detach the first winding bar, raise up on the spring that is in tension with your second winding bar.

The pressure on the other spring should then be set.

The opener should be quite easy to lift once you’re finished.

As the new torsion spring breaks in, it may still jump a bit and lift a little.
